13 Best Electric Toothbrushes for Cleaner, Brighter Teeth, According to Dentist (2022)

13 Best Electric Toothbrushes for Cleaner, Brighter Teeth, According to Dentist (1)

It’s hard to overstate the importance of oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth thoroughly and consistently can help prevent cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. And the easiest way to keep your mouth healthy (in addition to regular trips to the dentist) is by using the best electric toothbrush.

Do you really need an electric toothbrush?

To be clear: “Both manual and powered toothbrushes can effectively and thoroughly clean teeth,” says Ada S. Cooper, D.D.S, a New York City-based dentist and consumer advisor of the American Dental Association (ADA). But here’s the catch: If you’re using a manual toothbrush, you’re also responsible for doing all the work. In general, that means holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle while brushing the gum line and brushing the outer, inner, and surfaces of your teeth with gentle pressure for two minutes.

That’s why so many dentists recommend an electric brush. “Powered toothbrushes can be an important tool for people who have difficulty maneuvering a manual toothbrush,” says Cooper. Adam Salm, D.M.D, dentist and founder of Salm Dental. “They eliminate a lot of mistakes people tend to make when they brush at home and keep people on a routine,” he says.

The benefits of using electric toothbrushes

“There are two main benefits of using an electric toothbrush—safety and timing,” says Keith Arbeitman, D.D.S, dentist and co-founder of the Arbeitman & Shein aesthetic and restorative dentistry in New York City.

“Safety, because some electric toothbrush models can limit the amount of pressure you can put on the teeth and gums. The majority of dental work I do is either as a consequence of someone brushing too hard and damaging their teeth and gums or not brushing hard or long enough and allowing bacteria to linger, causing gingivitis or cavities,” explains Dr. Arbeitman.

“When brushing with a traditional toothbrush, you need to use them for a full two minutes (for a proper clean),” says Dr. Arbeitman. So, the timers on electric toothbrushes can be very helpful for keeping you on track. “Mouthpiece toothbrushes are automated in a way that with the press of a button, the brush does the work for you—using just enough pressure to effectively clean, without the risk of injury,” he adds.

How to shop for electric toothbrushes

Look for unique features. Figure out what will make you excited to brush your teeth. “If Bluetooth-enabled tech excites and motivates you, the mega brands all have products for you,” says Dr. Arbeitman.

Consider the price. Some electric toothbrushes can run between $200 to $300. Fortunately, you don’t have to rely on a super pricey pick for great results. There is a slew of different electric toothbrushes that can get the job done at more affordable prices.

Ready to give one a try? We’ve rounded up the best electric toothbrushes recommended by dentists to ensure your smile stays healthy, bright, and clean.

The Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 syncs with your smartphone and tracks which areas in your mouth you’ve brushed and which areas you’ve missed. It also has a two-minute timer and an over-brushing sensor. “Brushing too aggressively can cause an injury to your teeth or gums,” says Dr. Salm. Gary Glassman, D.D.S, an endodontist in Canada, also prefers this toothbrush: “The rounded brush head is the perfect shape to cover every area of your mouth,” he says. “It’s such a perfect toothbrush that you will probably see your dentist’s reflection in the mirror clapping for you.”
